Cloud, DevOps and Data Engineering

The cost of getting this wrong

What getting Cloud, DevOps and Data Engineering wrong costs you

Lift and shift, then the bill arrives

Lift and shift, then the bill arrives

Servers copied one for one into the cloud cost more than they did on-premises, and the promised savings turn into a monthly surprise nobody owns.

Data in the wrong country

Data in the wrong country

Workloads land in a European or US region by default, and a Saudi regulator or an enterprise customer asks the residency question after the migration is finished.

Dashboards nobody trusts

Dashboards nobody trusts

Three reports show three different revenue numbers, so leaders go back to asking for spreadsheets, and the data platform becomes an expensive archive.

The most common cloud migration in the Gulf goes like this. The servers are copied one for one into the cloud, a lift and shift, because it is the fastest way to hit a deadline. It works. Then the first full monthly bill arrives and it is higher than the old data centre ever was, because every machine was sized for a peak that happens twice a year and now runs, and bills, all month. Nobody owns the number, so it keeps growing. The migration was a success on the project plan and a failure on the P&L.

The second cost is geographic. Cloud accounts default to regions in Europe or the United States, and plenty of Gulf companies only discover where their data actually lives when an enterprise customer or a regulator asks. In Saudi Arabia the NCA's cloud controls expect in-Kingdom data residency, disaster recovery and an exit strategy for many workloads (MomentumX), and UAE PDPL adds its own questions. Moving data twice, once to the cloud and again to the right region, is an expensive way to learn that lesson.

The third failure is in the data itself. A company invests in a warehouse and a set of dashboards, and within months three reports show three different revenue figures because each one defines revenue its own way. Leaders stop trusting the numbers and go back to asking finance for a spreadsheet. The demand is real: Grand View Research estimates the UAE cloud migration services market at 345.5 million US dollars in 2025, heading to 1.99 billion by 2033. So is the risk of spending it on infrastructure that nobody trusts or can afford to run.

A different way to buy engineering

Migrate in waves, measure everything, keep it in region

A migration is a change to how your business runs, not a copy of your servers. The plan starts with what each workload costs and who depends on it, and only then with where it should go.

Done well, the most noticeable thing about it is that nobody noticed: the same systems, the same hours, a smaller bill and data in the right country.

A cost baseline before, a rollback plan for every wave, and runbooks your own team can use after.

Migrate in waves, measure everything, keep it in region

Our cloud migration services in Dubai and Riyadh start with a baseline. In the first week we inventory every server, database, integration and scheduled job, map the dependencies nobody documented, and record exactly what you pay today. Then we build a landing zone in your chosen UAE or Saudi region, with accounts, networks, identity, encryption and logging written as code in Terraform, and CI/CD pipelines so every deployment happens the same way. Only then does anything move, in small waves with the least critical systems first, each with a tested rollback plan and a cut-over window your team agreed to. Nothing moves in one heroic weekend, because heroic weekends are how outages happen.

Cost is part of the design, not a clean-up job. Every workload is sized against its real usage, budgets and alerts are set per team, and the final week is spent right-sizing and handing over. On the data side we build platforms on Spark, Databricks, BigQuery or Kafka that pull from your operational systems, clean the data and define each business metric once, so Power BI dashboards finally agree with each other. Our engineers use AI coding agents under senior review to write and check infrastructure code, pipelines and transformations, which lets a small team cover a lot of ground and spend its attention on the decisions that need judgement.

We are also honest about what should not move. Some workloads are cheaper and simpler where they are: a stable legacy system with a few years of life left, a licence that costs more in the cloud than on your own hardware, a database that would need a rewrite to benefit. The inventory in week one exists partly to find these, and a good migration plan usually includes a short list of things to leave alone, retire or replace with a subscription instead. Moving everything is not a strategy. It is a bigger invoice.

Your engagement lead is in Dubai and owns scope, risk and the cut-over plan. The engineers work from Yerevan in the same time zone as Dubai, so migration windows and incident calls happen on Gulf time. We work across AWS me-central-1, Azure UAE North, Google me-central2 and Oracle Riyadh and Jeddah, and recommend the region that fits your licences, services and regulators rather than the one we happen to prefer. If you are not yet sure whether to migrate at all, an IT consulting engagement can answer that first. For budgeting, our cloud migration cost guide for the UAE sets out what the market charges, with sources.

How it works

How the engagement runs, week by week

  1. Week 1

    Inventory, dependencies, cost baseline

We map every server, database, integration and scheduled job, find the dependencies nobody wrote down, and record what you pay today so every later decision has a number next to it.

  2. Weeks 2 to 3

    Landing zone, security, CI/CD

Accounts, networks, identity, encryption and logging are built as code in your chosen UAE or KSA region, with pipelines that deploy the same way every time and a security baseline in place before any data moves.

  3. Weeks 4 to 6

    Migrate in waves with rollback

Workloads move in small waves, least critical first, each with a tested rollback plan and a cut-over window agreed with your team. Nothing moves in one big weekend.

  4. Week 7

Optimise cost and hand over runbooks

We right-size what was over-provisioned, set budgets and alerts, and hand over runbooks, diagrams and access so your team can operate the platform without us.

Fit

Who this is for

  • A UAE or Saudi company still running on its own servers or a local hosting provider, facing a hardware refresh, an outage or a customer asking about resilience.
  • A company already in the cloud, often in a foreign region, whose bill keeps growing and whose data needs to move into the UAE or the Kingdom.
  • An operations or finance leader who wants one trusted set of numbers instead of competing spreadsheets and dashboards.
  • Not for you if you need a 24/7 on-site infrastructure team or hardware support in your server room. We work on cloud and code, not on racks.

Questions buyers ask us

Which cloud region should a UAE company use?

For most UAE companies, AWS me-central-1 or Azure UAE North, both in the UAE, with Google me-central2 in Dammam an option for Gulf-wide workloads. The right choice depends on your existing licences, the services you need and where your customers and regulators are.

What does cloud migration cost?

We do not publish prices. After a short inventory call you get a fixed quote within 2 business days. For market ranges on UAE cloud migration, with sources, see our cloud migration cost guide.

How do you avoid downtime during migration?

By migrating in small waves with data replicated ahead of time, a tested rollback plan for each wave, and cut-overs scheduled in agreed low-traffic windows. Critical systems move last, after the process has been proven on less important ones.

Can data stay inside Saudi Arabia for NCA compliance?

Yes. We build on in-Kingdom regions such as Oracle Riyadh and Jeddah, Google Dammam or other local providers, with disaster recovery inside the Kingdom as NCA controls require, and document the setup for your compliance file.

What is a data platform versus a dashboard?

A dashboard shows numbers. A data platform is what makes those numbers trustworthy: pipelines that pull data from your systems, clean it, define each metric once and keep history. Without the platform, every dashboard tells a slightly different story.

Do you provide managed DevOps after migration?

Yes. We can run the platform for you with monitoring, patching, cost reviews and on-call support, or hand it to your team with runbooks and training. Many clients start managed and take it in-house once their team is ready.

Can you reduce our current cloud bill?

Usually. Most bills carry idle resources, oversized instances, missing commitments and forgotten storage. We start with a cost review against your usage and show each saving with its effort and risk before changing anything.
